- During a game of Battle of Hoth, players use the Scenario Book and fight battles according to the rules described within.
- The goal of the game is to earn a specified number of medals (usually 4 or 5, depending on the victory conditions of the chosen scenario). In addition, some scenarios include a special rules section describing unique victory conditions.
- Medals are earned by eliminating enemy units and, in some cases, by capturing and holding specific terrain tiles or fulfilling certain objectives.
- Units may move or attack only if they receive an order. To issue orders to your units (and sometimes activate additional effects), you use command cards.
- A players turn consists of playing a chosen command card from hand, moving the ordered units, and resolving attacks using special dice. Then a new command card is drawn and the turn passes to the next player.
