When the mighty German Tiger 1 entered service in the autumn of 1942, it was the most advanced tank in the world, designed specifically to dominate the battlefield. Capable of destroying everything the Allies had in service, it possessed a range advantage that allowed it to kill without being damaged before enemy tank crews had time to think about defending themselves.
The Tiger's potential was never fully realised because it was too technically advanced, extremely complex and expensive to produce, which meant that there were never enough Tigers on the battlefield.
Between 1942 and 1944, only 1,347 Tiger 1 tanks were produced, and although it was undoubtedly one of the best tanks ever made, it was unable to hold back the ever-increasing Allied armament. To illustrate the disparity, it suffices to mention that American factories were able to produce more than 49,000 Sherman tanks during World War II.
